Clothesline Paradox
Solar panels appear in the national energy statistics. Clotheslines do not — though drying laundry in the sun saves the same energy. The country "grows" when it buys the panel, and stands still when it chooses the rope.
The paradox is about accounting, and it reaches far beyond laundry. Our measures count what is bought and sold, and ignore what is simply done. Cook at home and the economy records nothing; buy the same meal and it records growth. The meal is identical. The ledger is blind.
So when you hear that a country, a company, or a person is "more productive," ask what the measure can see. Many of the best decisions — rest, repair, growing food, raising children, drying clothes in the sun — register as zero.
Do not let the ledger set your values. The rope in the yard is worth exactly what the panel saves, whether or not anyone counts it.
