Default Bias

In countries where organ donation is the default — you are a donor unless you opt out — almost everyone is a donor. Where you must opt in, almost nobody is. Same people, same organs, same forms. The only difference is which box is pre-ticked.

This is the quietest power in the world: whatever is set as the default becomes the outcome for most people, most of the time. Not because they chose it — because choosing costs effort, and the default is free.

Now audit your own life for defaults. The phone that opens to the news. The groceries that run to snacks. The evening that defaults to the screen. You did not choose these any more than the donors did. They were pre-ticked.

So do the design work once: set the defaults you would choose if you were choosing. Fruit on the counter, the book on the pillow, the savings moved automatically on payday. Your future self lives on whatever the default is. Set it kindly.
