Groucho Marx Effect
Groucho Marx sent a famous telegram: "I don't want to belong to any club that would have me as a member." A joke — and a precise description of a real distortion.
The mechanism: we use acceptance as evidence of quality. If they want me, how good can they be? So the job offer deflates the job, the admiring friend is suspected of poor judgment, the love returned is suspected of low standards. Our own membership devalues the club.
The roots are in self-worth. The mind that quietly disbelieves in itself must disbelieve anything that accepts it — otherwise the arithmetic does not balance. Better to downgrade the club than to upgrade the self.
Catch it operating and reverse it deliberately: the job that wants you may simply have good taste. The friend who likes you may be a better judge than your doubt. Groucho's line is funny because it is absurd. Living by it is the punchline without the laughter.
