Hipster Effect
There is a mathematical joke with a serious core: people who strive to be different from the mainstream end up looking alike — because they are all reacting to the same mainstream, in the same direction, at the same time.
Watch the mechanism. The nonconformist's rule is "not what they do." But "they" is the same reference point for everyone, so every rebel computes the same opposite and arrives at the same café, the same beard, the same obscure band — a uniform of non-uniformity.
The lesson generalizes beyond fashion. Any identity built by negation is secretly controlled by what it negates. The man who defines himself against his father consults his father daily. Opposition is a form of attention, and attention is a form of loyalty.
True originality is quieter: it comes from facing your own values rather than the crowd's back. Ask what you would choose if no one were watching and no one were doing the opposite. That answer is yours. The rest is choreography.
