January Effect

Markets, dieters, and gyms all share a curious January: prices rise, resolutions begin, energy surges — not because anything material changed on the first, but because a page turned.

The mechanism is bookkeeping. The mind keeps its accounts in chapters, and the turn of the year closes one. Old failures are filed under last year's self; the new self opens with a clean ledger and a full tank of hope. Calendars are arbitrary, but the mind does not know that.

Mock it if you like, but notice: it works, briefly — and briefly is not nothing. A clean-ledger feeling is a real resource, like a tailwind.

The wise rider uses tailwinds without trusting them. Start things in January — but build the structure that will survive February: the scheduled session, the automatic transfer, the friend who expects you. The chapter break opens the door. Only design keeps you walking through it when the novelty wears off.
