Late-Mover Heuristic

Conventional wisdom worships the first mover: be early, seize the market, plant the flag. The record tells a quieter story — the pioneers get the arrows, and the settlers get the land. The late mover watches the pioneer make every expensive mistake, then builds the thing properly.

The mechanism is information. The first mover pays tuition for the whole industry: which features customers actually want, which dangers are real, which price the market bears. The second mover attends the same school free of charge.

This is not a license for endless waiting. The late mover's advantage is observation plus decisiveness — watching carefully, then moving fast once the fog lifts. The man who only watches becomes a spectator; the man who only rushes becomes the lesson.

So when you feel behind — in a career, a technology, a conversation — check whether you are actually late, or merely second. Second is a position with a view. Use it: let others pay the tuition, learn their syllabus, then build the school.
