Meta-Anxiety
Anxiety has a cruel upgrade available: anxiety about anxiety. The first wave is the worry itself — the presentation, the flight, the result. The second wave is the alarm at the first: my heart is racing, this is panic, what if it never stops, what is wrong with me? The second wave is usually the worse one — and it is entirely optional.
The mechanics: the body's alarm is brief by design — a surge meant to pass. But fearing the surge re-triggers it. Now the alarm is not about the presentation; it is about the alarm itself, and this loop can run for years, fuelled by nothing but its own echo.
The exit is acceptance, which here is not philosophy but mechanics. Let the first wave come — name it, feel it, watch it crest. Waves unresisted exhaust themselves in minutes. It is the struggle against the water that drowns swimmers.
So when anxiety arrives, greet it like weather: unpleasant, temporary, and not about you. You will still have the presentation. You will be spared the storm about the storm, which was the only one that ever lasted.
