Volume 1 · The Machine Between the Ears · Essay 310

Selfless Brain

It is fitting to end this volume with the machine itself: three pounds of tissue that never rests, never asks credit, and edits every moment of your experience before you receive it. The brain is the most selfless servant you own — and the most powerful.

Consider what it does without being asked: it filters a flood of signals into a manageable world, predicts the next half-second so smoothly you never notice the seam, runs your heart, files your day, and repairs itself at night while you lie still. All of it unseen. You have never once been thanked by it or thanked it.

The one fault of this servant is that it serves its own design, not your intentions. Its habits, fears, and shortcuts — every essay in this book — are its ways of keeping you safe, fast, and fed in a world that no longer exists.

So the proper relation to your brain is neither worship nor war. It is the relation of a good rider to a strong horse: respect its nature, train it patiently, feed and rest it, and keep the reins of direction gently in your hands. It will carry you your whole life. Learn how it likes to go.
